The 90-Day Blackout Handbook
How a family with small children gets ready, stays safe and stays warm through three months without the grid: water, food, babies, power, health, security and the people around you.
What a family does before, during and after a nuclear explosion, a radiation release or a power plant accident: where to shelter, how long to stay inside, how to clean off fallout and when iodine pills help. Every step comes from official public guidance.
Never run a generator, grill, camp stove or charcoal indoors or in a garage, even with the door open. Battery CO alarms on every floor and in the sleep room.
Generator: outdoors, 20 feet out.
A generator is backup only. Outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust pointing away from doors, windows and vents.
Formula: ready-to-feed, never watered down.
Ready-to-feed formula needs no water. If you mix powder, use bottled water or water brought to a rolling boil for 1 minute and used within 30 minutes. Never water formula down, never make homemade formula.
Safe sleep, every sleep.
The rules don't change in an emergency. Babies sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface in their own crib, bassinet or portable play yard, with no pillows, bumpers, blankets or soft toys. Use a sleep sack for warmth.
No fuel-burning heaters inside.
No camp stoves, grills, ovens, charcoal or kerosene heaters for warmth. One warm room, layers and sleeping bags instead.
Practice, not risk.
On the lights-off weekend the fridge, freezer and any medical device stay on their circuits, the CO alarms are tested and a phone stays charged.
Not medical advice. Ask your pediatrician about doses and feeding.
