Manual beats powered.
A hand saw always works. A cordless saw works until the batteries die.
Two is one, one is none.
Keep a spare of anything you can't live without: can opener, lighter, headlamp, water filter element.
Good enough, well kept.
A mid-priced tool that is sharp, oiled and where it belongs beats an expensive one you can't find.

Borrow before you buy. Big, rarely used tools (chainsaw, post-hole digger, ladder, wheelbarrow) can be shared across three or four neighbors.
What you already own counts. Kitchen knives, garden tools, the car's jack and lug wrench, camping gear: list it before shopping.
Rough US prices for decent mid-range tools, not quotes. Watch yard sales, estate sales and pawn shops: old hand tools are often better than new ones. The full list of 120+ tools, with what each is for, is in Book 2 (PDF).

Rules that don't bend
Carbon monoxide has no smell.
Never run a generator, grill, camp stove or charcoal indoors or in a garage, even with the door open. Battery CO alarms on every floor and in the sleep room.
Generator: outdoors, 20 feet out.
A generator is backup only. Outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, exhaust pointing away from doors, windows and vents.
Formula: ready-to-feed, never watered down.
Ready-to-feed formula needs no water. If you mix powder, use bottled water or water brought to a rolling boil for 1 minute and used within 30 minutes. Never water formula down, never make homemade formula.
Safe sleep, every sleep.
The rules don't change in an emergency. Babies sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface in their own crib, bassinet or portable play yard, with no pillows, bumpers, blankets or soft toys. Use a sleep sack for warmth.
No fuel-burning heaters inside.
No camp stoves, grills, ovens, charcoal or kerosene heaters for warmth. One warm room, layers and sleeping bags instead.
Practice, not risk.
On the lights-off weekend the fridge, freezer and any medical device stay on their circuits, the CO alarms are tested and a phone stays charged.
Not medical advice. Ask your pediatrician about doses and feeding.
